1. Colt McCoy has looked game-day sharp the past two practices. John Chiles struggled a little on Thursday with an interception and a fumble on a pitch from McCoy. But the potential is obvious.

2. Fozzy Whitaker broke another big touchdown run for the second consecutive practice. There is a certain "wow" factor about his running style. At the same time, Vondrell McGee has looked very solid, too.

3. Speaking of running backs, redshirt freshman Cody Johnson (5-11, 255) averaged nearly 10 yards a carry his final two years at Waller. He showed why, rumbling through three defenders after taking a short pass.

4. Earl Thomas continues to hit everything that moves in the secondary.

5. Sergio Kindle, once the nation's most highly recruited linebacker at Woodrow Wilson, said he is hoping to recapture the "old Sergio" after a series of injuries. He's pushing for a starting spot, while also taking snaps at defensive end.

If Sergio doesn't do something this year, he's got the potential to be one of the biggest busts since Shea Morenz.

Can Chiles be the next Tim Tebow?

No.

p.s. If Kindle is healthy, he's going to be a force this year.  Muschamp's got him playing LB and a combo LB/DE spot.  In other words, Kindle's going to be blitzing A LOT this year.

p.p.s. Earl Thomas is a bad, bad man.

The defensive line is a tale of two positions. Led by Brian Orakpo, the talent and depth at end is spectacular, enough so that two starters from a year ago moved to tackle. However, tackle will rely heavily on Roy Miller, while hoping that the two former ends — Lamarr Houston and Aaron Lewis — can stop the run as well as they can rush the passer.

Probable starters

Brian Orakpo, DE: Led team in sacks (5.5) despite only playing in 9 games

Roy Miller, DT: His 9 TFL were third best on team, although he didn't start a game.

Lamarr Houston, DT: With 66 tackles, the former end was the most active lineman in 2007

Henry Melton, DE: He came to the program as a tailback, but is now the power end.

Key backups

Aaron Lewis, DT: Had 10 QB hurries and 2 sacks playing end.

Eddie Jones, DE: Excellent pass rusher who is coming off of shoulder surgery

Ben Alexander, DT: Best run stopper on the bench

So I guess Melton is actually getting the job done and figuring out the position since his move from RB.

Word is he's made as much if not more improvement than anybody else this offseason.

Until every team figured out how easy it was to get under his pads, yea.

The wide receiving picture is starting to become clearer nine days into preseason.

Redshirt freshman Malcolm Williams (right) seems to be a lock for the third spot, based on recent conversations with coach Mack Brown and offensive coordinator Greg Davis.

The next three receivers, based on those same conversations, are freshman Dan Buckner and sophomores James Kirkendoll and Brandon Collins. Davis confirmed that Tuesday.

The first two are seniors Quan Cosby and Jordan Shipley.

The Longhorns always want to prepare six receivers for each game.

Maybe this will be the season that junior linebacker Sergio Kindle puts it together on the field.

Kindle was the No. 1 player on the 2006 American-Statesman Fab 55, but because of injuries and off-field issues, he's yet to realize his potential.

He and sophomore Keenan Robinson are vying for the starting spot at strongside linebacker.

"We're hoping it is (his time)," said Texas coach Mack Brown. "He's in great shape, he's done everything right, he's worked really, really hard."

Kindle missed all of spring rehabilitating from a knee injury he suffered during the Holiday Bowl.
